On 22 May 2022, sixteen brave and sleep deprived employees embarked on the 24.5 mile Yorkshire Three Peaks venture, including 1.5 miles of ascent. Thankfully the weather was well behaved, although it did become extremely windy at the top of Whernside.
The group all set off together initially, but soon broke into smaller groups. Group 1 disappeared into the horizon (displaying no teamwork and breaking the WS core value of Collaboration!) and finished in 10 hours and 22 minutes. Group 2 came home in 11 hours and 49 minutes, still beating the 12 hour target the guides had set.
Thankfully we only had one close shave, when Priya slipped on the descent of Whernside which is the most incident packed part of the challenge. Fortunately, she had a knight in shining armour to catch her with swift reflexes.
Whilst there were some sore bodies by the end, we also came across a group of 3 lads from Hull doing it bare footed. They put our challenge very much in perspective. Fair play to them for completing it.
Whilst everyone who participated had a thoroughly good weekend (especially Fred who discovered he is a very fortuitous pool player) we must remember that the Challenge was completed in aid of our Charity of the Year, Papyrus. I am therefore pleased to announce we raised a huge £6415.70 (including gift aid), the second highest figure the firm have achieved in a fundraising venture. This figure will enable Papyrus to respond to a staggering 1283 calls for help. Many thanks to everyone from the firm who contributed.
Next up, the national 3 peaks next year…
With special thanks to:
- The drivers, Andrea, Tim, Chris, Constance (and emergency driver James) for ensuring everyone got to Yorkshire (around Yorkshire) and back again. It cannot be underestimated how challenging the drive home on Sunday was. Navigating the stupid sheep also took some severe patience.
- Sion also deserves a thank you for kindly carrying the Papyrus banner all day Saturday despite his knee complaints.
- Fred, Andrea and Tim for cooking everyone breakfast on Sunday morning to give me a rest, for which I was very appreciative.
- The Yorkshire Dale Guides who kept us well looked after throughout Saturday and took many photos of us throughout the day.
- Charlotte Cook and CSR Committee for making it all possible by funding the cost of the guides and the accommodation.
- Daniella for setting up the Just Giving site, and liaising with Papyrus on my behalf to acquire the t-shirts and banner.
